Midsummer’s Music Presents Magical Piano Trios
An extraordinary mixture of spectacular music by Swedish female composer Laura Netzel, Spanish composer Joachim Turina, and German composer Franz Schubert.
Sister Bay, Wis. – July 8, 2022 – In the 18th century, the piano trio – piano, violin, and cello – attracted the attention of many composers for its full and varied texture. Midsummer’s Music presents its Trio Magic program featuring piano trios by Swedish female composer Laura Netzel, Spanish composer Joachim Turina, and German composer Franz Schubert. The extraordinary and esteemed musicians performing are violinist David Perry, cellist James Waldo, and pianist Jeannie Yu.
Netzel, born in 1839, created pieces described as late romantic in character with hints of the developing French Impressionism. Her Serenade, Op. 50, which consists of a single movement, was written in 1895 and, like so many of her works, was published under the pseudonym of N. Lago so as not to divulge her gender. It’s a beautiful, touching composition that features the cello in a melodic role to a greater extent than many would normally expect.
Born in Seville, Spain, Joachim Turina was that interesting mix of a composer whose music bears the undeniable inspiration from his homeland, but whose French training enriched and colored his output. Circulo, Op. 91, a fantasy for piano trio, was written in 1936, and its three movements reflect the adventures of a single day, starting with a quiet dawn and gaining momentum, then accelerating to a thrilling midday dance, and concluding with a calm evening.
German composer Franz Schubert was a tremendous devotee of Beethoven, who died in 1827, one year prior to Schubert. At Schubert’s request, he was buried in Währing cemetery as close to Beethoven as possible, with only three other graves separating the two. Schubert composed his Trio in E-flat, Op. 100, D. 929, following Beethoven’s death, and it is one of the few late works of his that he actually got to hear performed before his own death. It is a massive work in four movements, and its familiar second movement has been used in more than a dozen movie and television soundtracks.
The Trio Magic program is performed four times: July 15 at 7:00pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay; July 16 at 7:00pm at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay; July 17 at a 3:00pm Salon Concert at the Trenchard residence in Sister Bay; and July 21 at 7:00pm at the Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor.
The seventh program of the season, Lush & Thrilling Romantic Poetry, features four German composers: Franz Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C Minor, D. 703; Friedrich Gernsheim’s Divertimento in E Major, Op. 53; and Carl Maria von Weber’s Grand Quintetto in B-flat Major, Op. 34. Concerts are at 7:00pm, July 20, at Sister Bay Moravian Church in Sister Bay; 7:00pm, July 22, at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay; 7:00pm, July 23, at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay; and 5:00pm, July 24, at Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor.
