Midsummer’s Music Prolific Composers Mozart and Healy
Pairing a great classical composer with a modern, NYC-based composer.
Sister Bay, Wis. – June 24, 2022 – Midsummer’s Music, Wisconsin’s oldest summer chamber music series, excels in presenting works by lesser-known composers, and it is not uncommon that widely recognized names are mixed with unfamiliar ones in a single program. Such is the case with the four provocative Mozart & Healy concerts that begin July 1.
In the mid-1750s, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his Trio in E-flat Major, “Kegelstatt,” K.498, and his Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat Major, K.449, along with dozens of other pieces, including two new operas, a revision of an earlier opera, and additional piano concerti. The Trio in E-flat bucked the standard piano trio tradition (piano, violin, and cello) by replacing the violin and cello with a clarinet and viola, embracing the opportunity to play three characteristic timbres against one another. The Piano Concerto No. 14 was written two years prior to the Trio, when Mozart was 25 years old, and it is one of five concerti he wrote that year. As the 14th of 27 piano concerti by Mozart, it demonstrates the compositional command he developed that allowed him to write a showpiece that, despite the lightness of the style, shows considerable depth.
Midsummer’s Music’s 2021 Composer-in-Residence Will Healy returns for his second year in that honored position. An accomplished and celebrated composer, pianist, improviser, and educator based in New York, he aims to write music that enables collaborations among inspiring artists regardless of genre boundaries, and he is the artistic director of ShoutHouse, a collective of hip-hop, jazz, and classical musicians. His Trio for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano – commissioned by Midsummer’s Music – begins with a choral-like movement, where the piano introduces a syncopated, improvisational figure that slowly takes over the choral and leads, without pause, to the second movement, which is heavily jazz-influenced. The final movement is lyrical, featuring melodic lines in the clarinet and viola over staccato, crystally rhythms in the piano. Will is sponsored by the MMG Foundation.
Featured musicians are clarinetist Alicia Lee, violinists David Perry and Ann Palen, violist Allyson Fleck, cellist James Waldo, and pianists Jeannie Yu and Will Healy. This program is performed four times: July 1 at 7:00pm at Björklunden in Baileys Harbor; July 2 at 7:00pm at the Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor; July 3 at 3:00pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay; and July 5 at 7:00pm at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay.
Will Healy will lead an electrifying Coffee Talk event on July 2 at 2:00pm at Egg Harbor’s Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion. Coffee Talk programs are free, informal presentations on music topics by ensemble members. staff, and friends.
