Midsummer’s Music hosts “Coffee Talk” lectures on music topics by its ensemble members, staff, and friends during the summer season and occasionally throughout the year. The free lectures often relate to Midsummer’s Music concert themes, music pieces, and composers, and to Griffon String Quartet activities. During the organization’s Bastille Day Celebration program of four concerts, Peter Conroy, PhD of French Literature, will lead the “Impressionism and Depression: Music and Society in France 1870–1914” lecture.
Conroy will guide Coffee Talk participants in examining the political and social situation in France from 1871 to 1914. This was the “Belle Epoque,” a crucial period of progress, prosperity, and innovation in French technology, painting, and music. Topics include the Eiffel Tower, the Impressionists, the Dreyfus Affaire, Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and the trajectory from Mallarme’s “Afternoon of a Faun” through Debussy’s “Prelude” to Nijinsky’s scandalous ballet.
Dr. Conroy is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois–Chicago, where he taught French language and literature for 34 years and served two terms as department chairman. He has written four books of literary criticism, translated another about French history, published over 40 articles in professional journals, and presented many papers at scholarly conferences in the U.S. and Europe. He resides with his wife, Beverly Ann, in Fish Creek during the summer. Since his retirement, he has taken up golf as well as writing essays and short stories.
The Impressionism and Depression Coffee Talk is at 1:00pm, July 11 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim. Seating is limited. Please reserve tickets at midsummersmusic.com or (920) 854-7088.
The 2024 concert series is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund, and the season is dedicated to the memory of Jean Berkenstock.
