After her triumphant performances last season of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, Jeannie returns this season to offer Grieg’s magnificent romantic treasure. We’ve discovered a stunningly beautiful arrangement with string quartet that will feature Jeannie in all her radiance. Puccini’s hauntingly beautiful Crisantemi opens the program followed by Emilie Mayer’s G Minor String Quartet. Of the seven quartets she wrote, it is the only one published in her lifetime. Her introduction of a Bach Chorale melody into the slow movement is spine tingling and will make you crave more from her.

Crisantemi • Giacomo Puccini
String Quartet

Quartet in G Minor, Op. 14 (1860) • Emilie Mayer
String Quartet

Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16 [Per Tengstrand, arr.] • Edvard Grieg
Piano and String Quartet

Jeannie Yu, Piano
David Perry, Dawn Wohn, and Sahada Buckley, Violin
Allyson Fleck, Viola
Paula Kosower, Cello

Egg Harbor artists Angela Lensch and Tony Bessen, who participated in MM’s 2020 artistic violins project with a stunning mosaic-covered instrument, have created a new work of art that was inspired by one of the pieces of music from the Grieg Piano Concerto concert. Is it Giacomo Puccini’s Crisantemi, Emilie Mayer’s Quartet in G Minor, or Edvard Grieg’s Concerto that served as the inspiration? Angela and Tony don’t know which piece they heard, and concertgoers won’t know until the unveiling!
