William Koehler, a native of Houston, is Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University, where he taught piano from 1985 to 2014. He studied with Moreland Roller, Adele Marcus, and William Race, and his awards include first prizes in the 1984 San Antonio International Keyboard Competition and the 1989 New Orleans International Piano Competition. Koehler received his D.M.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986.
An active performer of chamber music, he appears on Cedille, Canti Classics, and Centaur releases, and has performed with the Vermeer, Prague, Pro Arte, Arianna, and Avalon string quartets. He was a pianist with the Midsummer’s Music chamber music organization in Door County, Wisconsin, from 1991 to 2018.
A recipient of an Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award from NIU in 2001, Koehler is a past president of the Waubonsee Valley chapter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association. He also served as coordinator of undergraduate advising at NIU’s School of Music from 2001 to 2005 and has been a member of NIU’s Faculty Senate and University Council.
