Midsummer’s Music Awarded Women’s Fund Sustainability Grant
Midsummer’s Music received $2,500 from the Women’s Fund of Door County to support music by women composers and performances with women musicians.
Sister Bay, Wis. – July 13, 2022 – Midsummer’s Music is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $2,500 Sustainability Grant from the Women’s Fund of Door County in support of its dedication to presenting music by women composers and performances with women musicians. The grant was made possible from the following Door County Community Foundation funds: the Women’s Fund Endowment of Door County, the Margaret C. McGuire Fund, the Marion Peterson Memorial Fund, the Kirk and Donna Scattergood Family Fund, the Bev and Tom Lisle Fund, the Sally and Michael O’Brien Family Fund, the Dave and Lolly Ratajczak Fund, and the Carolyn Zahn Waxler & Morris Waxler Fund.
Midsummer’s Music, Wisconsin’s oldest summer chamber music series, excels in presenting works by lesser-known composers—often female composers and composers of color who have not been lifted to the pantheon of greatness that few composers attain, but whose works are some of the most inspired pieces of chamber music. For its 2022 summer season, Midsummer’s Music is presenting music by Laura Netzel, a 19th century Swedish composer who published under the pseudonym of N. Lago so as not to divulge her gender; Dame Ethel Smyth, a 19th century English composer whose grit and determination to succeed as a composer, conductor, and author led to being an active member of the suffragette movement; Louise Farrenc, a French composer who was the only woman to have been appointed professor at the Paris Conservatory in the 19th century; and Libby Larsen, a 20th century American composer whose oeuvre includes important works for orchestra, dance, opera, chamber, and solo performance.
Midsummer’s Music’s 2022 season ensemble is 55 percent comprised of women musicians: flautist Heather Yarmel, oboist Lindsay Flowers, clarinetist Alicia Lee, pianist Jeannie Yu, violinists Ann Palen, Eleanor Bartsch, Maynie Bradley, and Ji-Yeon Lee, and violists Sally Chisholm, Allyson Fleck, Mary Deck, and Blakeley Menghini.

Midsummer’s Music was co-founded in 1990 by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, long-time Door County summer residents and principal orchestral players with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. What began as two concerts among friends has become one of the Midwest’s most anticipated chamber music series, bringing thousands of chamber music enthusiasts from around the globe to the magical Door County Peninsula.
